Virgen_de_GuadalupeA PRIEST will swap the east end of Glasgow for the East River of Manhattan to take up one of the most prestigious diplomatic roles in the Catholic Church.

Monsignor Peter Smith – who became a YouTube sensation after Susan Boyle was filmed fainting in his arms – is heading for the United Nations in New York after being appointed as attache to the papal nuncio.

A nuncio is the equivalent of ambassadors of other countries.

Monsignor Smith, based at St Mary’s Cathedral in Calton, takes up the three-year post – working for Indian archbishop FrancisChullikatt – on March 1.
