NAME OF 'WOMAN' WHO SPEAKS TO USERS OF iPHONE BRINGS US TO A DISCUSSION OF AN INDIAN GODDESS AND POSSESSION BY TECHNOLOGY

There is a distinction between a "curiosity" and "coincidence." But sometimes the two words coincide. Mainly not. One type of curiosity is a coincidence that seems to sail past mere happenstance. In other words, a coincidence that seems planned; part of a pattern; synchronicity; perhaps bearing a message.

So it is with the coincidence of "Siri," the name for that artificial voice that serves as an "intelligent personal assistant" and knowledge navigator for those who use Apple's iPhone. Call her an audio robot, deigning to direct us from cyberspace.

The introduction of robotic voices into the mainstream (Droid has an anonymous one) -- telling us how to get places, or searching up items for us on the internet -- is curious enough. But we note the happenstance, according to a new book, Demons, Deliverance, and Discernment, by Father Mike Driscoll, that "the Tulu culture of southern India has an annual ritual in which thousands of people honor Siri, the pagan goddess of prosperity. The eight-hour ritual includes bringing offerings to this goddess and chanting an ancient legend about her. During the ceremony women claim to be possessed by the spirit of her son Kumar. Most participants seem to have a positive experience: they sway to the sound of the singing, become glassy-eyed, and are said to establish a spiritual bond with one another. However, one or more of them -- usually novices -- scream incoherently, hiss, curse, throw themselves to the ground, and become violent."

There are many curious things, in our world, in our time. There are many coincidences. They are dismissed by our psychologists. Father Driscoll is not drawing a connection to Apple. He is merely speaking of pagan cultures in this book, which, though often psychological, is valuable. Guardian spirits? Ancestor spirits? The difference between mental illness and possession? The times they "coincide"?

Actually, "Siri," as with the iPhone, is said to come from the intended name for the original developer's first child and derives from a Norse name meaning "beauty" and "victory." It certainly has helped make Apple a winner, talk about "prosperity." In England is a technology company called "Evi." Fortunately, no "L" at the end -- a company that specializes in, yes, knowledge based and semantic search engine software. The company was once known as "True Knowledge." The idea of magical "true" knowledge might even remind us of the Garden (and the bite from an apple). In this world, there are many signposts. There are many coincidences. Sometimes we read too much into things. Sometimes we don't read into things enough. Sometimes, we pay more attention to coincidence than perhaps it deserves, if indeed there is such a thing as coincidence. Mostly, we wander blindly. Due to the new ways of communicating, human attention spans now average a mere eight seconds.

And so do we traverse into the world of artificial intelligence. Will humans soon have computers built right into their bodies? Will we begin to redefine the word "human"? Apple of course now has a computer for your wrist (the iWatch).

We are possessed by technology.

It has brought prosperity. It has brought a lot of convenience, for sure. It has brought access to knowledge -- instant, at your fingertips. Hopefully it's end result will not be dehumanization.

[Feedback: "Hi, after reading the story about possession and computers, I'd like to relay a dream I had 30 years ago. At that time the computer world existed of $50.00 glorified word processors. I've typically had a number of prophetic dreams, many of which come true. I'm a 3rd order Carmelite as well. I dreamt of a star filled Galaxy and at its center was a huge Computer whose beam was searching the sky. The beam finally reached me and as it did my palms started bleeding as the wounds of Christ. Looking up at the Computer the numbers 666 were the only marking upon it. As the years have gone by and computers have changed the world, I've often wondered at this dream. I'm not sure how computers are connected with the anti Christ, but it's made me extremely cautious of the whole movement towards a total tech society. The fruits aren't good for the soul, Thank you and God bless Pam Olimpio OCDS."]
