PRAYER NEED: WOMAN WHO TOOK HER LIFE IN OREGON WAS AFFLICTED BY A CANCER LINKED TO POLIO VACCINE

Brittany Maynard, the woman who tragically took her own life in Oregon last weekend (11/1/14), under the state's assisted-suicide law (a Vatican official has described the death as "wicked"), was suffering from a type of brain cancer that has been linked, among other things, to a virus found in one of history's most famous vaccines.

The possible causes of the cancer, known as glioblastoma multiforme, are listed in medical research papers, medical websites, and other resources as: age (those over fifty more susceptible), medical radiation, familial diseases such as tuberous sclerosis, exposure to the chemical polyvinyl chloride (found in plastics), malaria, herpes, Turcot's syndrome, childhood CT scans -- and a monkey virus that contaminated polio vaccinations, including those devised by Dr. Jonas Salk.

There are those who believe that polio vaccinations, particularly those administered from 1955 to 1963, but perhaps even, in some cases, up to 1999 or more recently, have caused a myriad of malignancies due to the presence of a simian (monkey) virus known as "SV-40" -- which caused one version of the vaccine to be withdrawn in 1963, but not before ninety-eight million people had been inoculated.

Research is tentative, and the connections controversial. While some major medical centers mention the possibility of vaccination as a potential cause, others do not. But it is certainly an intriguing possibility, with plenty of reason to think it may factor into some if not many cases of that cancer, as well as another rare malignancy called mesothelioma (afflicting the inner lung tissue).

As with most cancers, a single cause may not be possible to indicate. Often, a number of risk factors (diet, exposure to chemicals, radiation, and sometimes viruses) can factor into a malignancy. But the facts, in the case of the polio vaccine, are jarring. The problem: monkey kidneys were used to culture large quantities of the virus for mass production -- and the kidneys harbored dozens of viruses alien to the human organism, including SV 40, which was found by a researcher named Dr. Michele Carbone at the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center at Loyola University in Illinois to be a potent carcinogen.

As far back as 1960, a government researcher raised a red flag after she found that when she injected mice with the mixture on which the vaccine was cultured, they developed tumors.

The matter was hushed up by the government, which sought to prevent panic among the millions who'd been vaccinated. It was kept on the market for two more years. Since then, reported The Atlantic Monthly years ago, at least a dozen laboratories have found SV 40 in samples of rare brain and bone tumors, including glioblastoma.

In 1995, the virus was reported in children's brain tumors -- meaning that while the most troublesome vaccine had been taken off the market in the 1960s, the virus was still present, to some degree, in more modern versions.

Explains an organization called the SV 40 Foundation: "SV 40 was the fortieth virus found in rhesus monkey kidney cells when these cells were used to make the polio vaccine. This virus contaminated both the inactivated polio vaccine created by Dr. Jonas Salk and the oral or 'live polio vaccine created by Dr. Albert Sabin. In 1961, SV40 was discovered by Dr. Bernice Eddy of the National Institute of Health, Division of Biologics when she took the material used to grow polio vaccines and injected it into hamsters. Tumors grew in the hamsters. Her discovery was subsequently validated by Drs. Maurice Hilliman and Benjamin Sweet of Merck.

"Upon the discovery that SV40 was an animal carcinogen that had found its way into the polio vaccines, a new federal law was passed in 1961 that required that no vaccines contain this virus. However, this law did not require that SV 40 contaminated vaccines be thrown away or that the contaminated seed material (used to make all polio vaccines for the next four decades) be discarded. As a result, known SV 40 contaminated vaccines were injected into children up until 1963. In addition, it has been alleged that there have been SV 40-contaminated batches of oral polio vaccine administered to some children until the end of the 1990's."

Are they still in certain vaccines?

Many other forms of cancer are alleged. In the future, we will have a special report on this.

A famous case involving a boy named Alexander Horwin, who died in 1999, seems to indicate that the answer is "yes."

He succumbed to the rare brain cancer. And his parents, searching out a reason, had his tumor tested -- analyses that turned up the SV 40 virus (though it was not prevalent in either parent, nor in the mother's umbilical cord).

The germination period of seven or so months for this cancer in youngsters fit with polio vaccinations administered to Alexander eight months before. Other cancers take decades to develop, pointing up the need to bolster the immune system (which can dismantle many such viruses).

A lawsuit against the company his parents held responsible for the exposure did not succeed when a judge claimed there was no direct proof. But one is led to wonder. [see Alexander's story]. Reported a San Francisco newspaper: "A growing number of medical researchers fear that a monkey virus that contaminated polio vaccine given to tens of millions of Americans in the 1950s and '60s may be causing rare human cancers. For four decades, government officials have insisted that there is no evidence the simian virus called SV 40 is harmful to humans. But in recent years, dozens of scientific studies have found the virus in a steadily increasing number of rare brain, bone, and lung-related tumors -- the same malignant cancer SV 40 causes in lab animals. Even more troubling, the virus has been detected in tumors removed from people never inoculated with the contaminated vaccine, leading some to worry that those infected by the vaccine might be spreading SV 40."

Vaccines have saved many lives, and countless kids from polio. Has there been a hidden price to pay? Is there any link -- in addition to so many other factors (diet, chemicals, radiation) -- to what seems like so much cancer around us? Prayer need here.

No need for fright. Just for good countermeasures (such as improvements in what we eat).

Ninety-eight million Americans  were exposed to it in the 1950s and 1960s -- and perhaps beyond. Is the Holy Spirit removing "scales" from our eyes?
