MANIFESTATIONS OF DEVIL HAVE PROLIFERATED IN OUR WORLD IN WAYS MANY TRY TO EXPLAIN AWAY

We live at a time of many manifestations that have to do with evil. It's not the most pleasant of topics but to ignore it is to allow it to operate in darkness, where it festers.

Last weekend, an example apparently was presented at the "Grammy" music awards. We didn't watch it, but one could hardly escape news the next morning of one rock "star" arriving in an "egg" carried by very strangely-attired men. It's a singer who has woven occult symbols into her repertoire (either consciously, as a devotee; by coincidence, which seems very unlikely; or due to a spirit controlling her), and has made headlines in the past for her concern that a spirit or spirits are following her. "There is much more than just occult symbolism with her arrival at the Grammy's in a giant egg," noted one viewer. "This symbolism of the 'babe in the egg' was the ultimate expression of Aleister Crowley's 'sexual-magick' and was used to invoke a very powerful demonic entity. The 'Lam' creature is being invoked by her direct and purposeful action." Crowley was so immersed in occult darkness that his own mother called him "the beast." In 1900, this influential practitioner of the black arts declared the age of Jesus as over and a "new age" dawning. His writings have inspired many people, including the founder of America's Church of Satan (as well as famous musicians). Crowley claimed to be in contact with an entity that looked just like depictions of modern "aliens."

They are not things we like to report. God will judge souls. We will note darkness. The manifestations are diverse. We are seeing a dehumanization and thus coarsening of society. Some argue that it began when the Gutenberg printing press produced the Reformation which produced the Scientific Revolution which produced the Enlightenment which produced the Industrial Revolution which dehumanized us through mass production, a process now further underway -- dehumanization (we are all "alone together," to quote one author) -- with the internet, cell phones, and of course TV.

The devil slips into vacancies.

He is cold as ice (despite his "heat") and impersonal and he also shows himself in psychology, influencing new "diagnoses" that cover his footprints and manifesting in mental patients in a way that shows the overall increase in his activity everywhere, especially in our young, who are exposed to daunting levels of darkness via video games, dehumanized, occult movies, and musicians like the one in the "egg." 

"I am a nurse practitioner in college health at Texas Tech University," one viewer, Judy Johnson, wrote several weeks back. "At a recent meeting the psychiatry and counseling department stated that in the past month they have seen an epidemic of college students having nightmares, sleep paralysis and being attacked by 'succubi.' In the light of current spiritual events, that is not surprising in this vulnerable population and backs up what you have previously reported. The psychiatrist at the meeting said that many of the patients say they 'wake up with something on top of them' and that they experience terror, bad odors (like rotting food) and also that they often only feel the attacks and cannot see anything. What was also interesting is that the medical community is not interested in spiritual solutions and thinks it is a form of mass hysteria related to the current culture with vampire books and other supernatural dark literature, movies etcetera prevalent everywhere."

Perhaps psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and psychology would find greater success if they started rooting out the real cause of many "mental" afflictions. When they speak about double personalities (in "psychotics"), perhaps they need to wonder if it's really two "personalities" -- or two spirits. And multiple personality: the word that comes to mind, when they explain away someone with twenty personalities, is "legion."

Evil is rising in our times. It is a huge "sign." It is the "hour of the power of darkness," as the Madonna has said. The caution is always that when we obsess about evil, when we think of it too much, we give it power. On the other hand, when we ignore it, we allow it free rein. To see the level of evil is simply to note the level of materialism and the prevalence of occult tattoos or the spirit behind many "reality" shows. Evil is often subtle; it is often refined.

Is there a devil under every rock?

Evil spirits are pervasive -- at least in the testimony of men like Howard Pittman from Mississippi who during a near-death experience claims he was shown the working of devils in our era.

"A classic example of demon possession is an individual displaying a split personality," he wrote in a book called Demons: An Eyewitness Account. "It was shown to me that all spirits have only one soul or personality. That includes the spirit of man that lives in the physical body. If that physical body starts to show more than one personality, then that body has more than one spirit living in it."

We have heard this from others in psychiatric care. "I cannot overemphaszie the important role Satan and his demons play in our lives today," claims Pittman, a Baptist minister who served in law enforcement for 26 years, including in New Orleans, Baltimore, and the Louisiana State Police; he "died" on August 3, 1979. He asserts he was taken before the very "Throne of God" where he was given a message to share with the world -- a message that largely involves the surge of evil spirits in our time. He says  evil spirits are forming "a great, worldwide attack as part of Satan's grand plan. Satan and his demons are only able to do this because they are experts at remaining anonymous. If they bring their work into the open, it will serve to devastate them.""

"These demons are making straight the paths of their lord, Satan," he continues, for our determination. "The objective of the demon of greed for this end time is to destroy the economy of the world. This is necessary in order to allow the people of the world to accept the anti-christ. He will bring them a good-looking but false economy. In turn, the warring demons must totally destroy peace from the earth. The anti-christ will be accepted because he is bringing peace to the earth, but this peace will also be false. The demons from the third order must trample down God's true religion in order for the anti-christ to bring a one-world religion into existence."

"From congregation to congregation, from one church to another, throughout all this land, we find preacher after preacher playing down the existence of demons and even the existence of Satan!" he adds. "Then, there are others who, when they admit that Satan and his demons are real, de-emphasize their importance and capability. Not only are local ministers doing this, but many Christian authors are doing this through their books. A look at the books which line the shelves of the Christian bookstores quickly shows how effective Satan's last-day doctrine of his own 'non-existence' is."

We get this from the father of "Hannah Montana" actress Miley Cyrus: Just before moving out to Los Angeles, the whole family had been baptized together by their pastor at the People’s Church in Franklin, Tennessee. "It was (wife) Tish’s idea," he told GQ Magazine. "She said, 'We’re going to be under attack, and we have to be strong in our faith and we’re all going to be baptized…'" And there, driving to work each day in the City of Angels, notes the magazine, was this sign. “A physical sign. It could have easily said ‘You will now be attacked by Satan.’ ‘Entering this industry, you are now on the highway to darkness…'" Do you really see it in such clearly spiritual terms—that your family was under attack by Satan, he was asked. "I think we are right now. No doubt. There’s no doubt about it."

Indeed, he hides in the shadows (behind the neon) -- preferring that we don't believe in him or at least don't take him seriously. How many times at Mass is the reading on demons, followed by a homily that makes no mention of that? We need to bring this up with our bishops.

How far to go with all this? We certainly have seen a great manifestation of evil in how certain persons have been inserted into our seminaries, or at least how the devil has tempted them. Of five groups of demons Pittman claims he was shown -- controlling such things as the occult, sexual sin (the ugliest spirits), warfare, strife and greed -- was also a category he was not allowed to know but that he says are always at work when evil infests or possesses a person. He called this the "mystery demon group."

With Christ, we have all power over evil. Any time we are troubled, we can call upon angels -- who make devils tremble. Jesus' Name is all-powerful. No evil can conquer us, if we are in Him.

But to purge it, we must also recognize where evil is.
