'IMITATION OF CHRIST' REVEALED AS ONE OF LUCIA OF FATIMA'S KEEPSAKE BOOKS
Spirit Daily
Rumors are circulating that Lucia dos Santos, the last of the Fatima seers, has been bed-ridden. We're trying to check that rumor. We know that she was taken to special quarters last winter to prevent pneumonia from the damp Portuguese climate. She is now 94.
Fascinating is the fact that in her last memoir -- released a short while ago -- Sister Lucia cites The Imitation of Christ as a keepsake book that her mother had given her as a child. "The Imitation of Christ I have always carried with me," wrote the visionary. "It is now very old, but it's the same old one. When I learned that the rector of the shrine in Fatima was looking for objects that had been in my parent's house, I gave him the Imitation of Christ together with two needles with which my mother had taught me to do crochet when I was little."
Written by a priest named Thomas a Kempis in the 14th century, the book is an extraordinary treasure of deep Christian devotion, urging that men give up everything to God and never grow attached to things or creatures of this world. It also contains messages from the Lord on the conduct of daily spiritual life. "For more than five centuries, The Imitation of Christ has been acclaimed by people of every faith and belief as one of the greatest spiritual writings of all time," says the book's back cover.
