Sent to Earth (Michael Brown) Throughout the centuries, since Noah, there have been strange times: periods when floods, earthquakes, tidal waves, storms, droughts, plagues, volcanoes, and even asteroid or comet activity have haunted the earth. The hints are right there in the nightly news. It's about to happen again. God is poised to send major events, and it's for a simple reason. Like the people in ancient times, we've allowed evil to build up, and as a result we face happenings everywhere. This is the book Mother Angelica has called  'awesome.' WILL JAPANESE QUAKE TRIGGER OTHER TREMORS AROUND THE WORLD?

[Adapted from original unedited draft of Sent To Earth]:

Earthquakes often occur in groups and not just along the same faults or even in the same part of the world. Indeed, just days ago, this YouTube clip from an amateur predicted a great Pacific quake based on recent seismic activity. There was a quake that toppled buildings in China this week, and around the same time, millions of dead fish went belly-up in a California harbor. There was also that quake in New Zealand (Christchurch). On the Big Island of Hawaii, a volcano's activity suddenly intensified.

Meanwhile, historically: on January 21, 1906, there was an 8.4 magnitude quake in Japan that was followed ten days later by an even larger 8.6 in Ecuador. The following April came the famous 8.3 in San Francisco that razed much of the city, followed by a quake of equal power in the Aleutian Islands. Just thirty minutes after the Alaskan quake there was a yet larger one in Chile, and in what can only be described as a phenomenal run, that was followed by a quake in New Guinea which was followed a couple weeks later by a similarly large one in Ecuador which was followed a month after by a magnitude eight in Australia. The Antilles were rattled within three weeks and on December 22 there was a large tremor in China, succeeded by a 7.6 in the Aleutians and then another eight in Chile three days later. "Normally you have one magnitude eight earthquake every one-and-a-half to two years," says Lowell S. Whiteside of the National Geophysical data Center. "In 1906 there were about ten of them."

There was another storm in 1950. Most of it occurred between December 2 and 14 and started with an 8.1 in the Vanuatu Islands followed by an 8.3 in Chile and then a seven in Peru. Just 11 hours after the rumbling in South America came a yet stronger quake in the Kermadec Islands, which preceded two quakes in Acapulco and the Tonga Islands that came in four days and were both stronger than the recent Turkish disaster.

While there are many who argue that except for certain instances like Anatolia quakes occur as isolated events -- that they rarely cause another one -- the sequence in 1906 seemed like an example of interconnection. There are times when events in a cycle are directly linked. There is sometimes more than randomicity. Nowhere was this clearer than in the case of the Aleutian quake that occurred less than an hour before one of similar power in Chile, which is thousand of miles -- nearly half a globe -- away and an example of how forces we can't see, forces that are mysterious, may thread through disasters. "If you look at the speed of the 1906 earthquake in the Aleutians, it arrived in Chile at the same time the 8.5 there began," says Whiteside, who also says that quakes can be caused by the expansion or melting of glaciers (which were in great prominence during the Bronze Age). "Most of the quakes in Canada, in Scandinavia, and in Siberia are the result of the motion of the earth after the melting of the glaciers," says Whiteside. "Basically you're getting a rebound. The glaciers push the earth down and after they melt the earth comes back up and in the process of rebounding you get a large number of earthquakes. You're talking about huge amounts of weight, so the deformation goes all the way into the mantle and that's basically a global phenomenon. The fluid is going to push other fluid. It's all interconnected."

There is controversy over such theories as there is contention in all scientific fields but it made a neat little package in that the Bronze Age could be explained as a time when cool weather built up glaciers that drew water from the oceans and lowered sea level at the same time that they pushed so far down into the ground that they triggered at least some of the seismicity. Was it true cause and effect? Had the mantle been disrupted like a bowl of jelly? Or had one cycle simply crossed another?

There are 1,000-to-2,000-year cycles for quakes in Anatolia and smaller cycles that come at 30-year intervals in places like Taiwan and in public remarks disturbingly similar to hurricane forecasters, geologists in Taiwan warn that earthquakes are coming. In 1993 5,500 tiny tremors were recorded there, a figure that had jumped to 15,000 by 1997 and clearly led up to the event in 1999. A quiet cycle was ending there. Was it also ending elsewhere? Around the world 1999 had proven to be busier than normal with double the average number of deaths, and while the number of major earthquakes were just slightly above average, faults in many places are coming due. A little storm is in the offing and made one wonder if there was a cycle to the earthquakes of 1906 and 1950, if twice a century, every fifty years or so, there might be a sequence of big ones, quakes that exceed magnitude eight or perhaps even form a cycle that would bring back the rattling of the Bronze Age.

It's impossible to establish a global cycle -- as with weather, there simply isn't a long enough historical record -- but tremors can certainly come rapid-fire and had been attested to not just by what had occurred in 1906 but in decadal sequences like that of the 1920s when quakes killed 200,000 in Genshu, China, 143,000 in Yokohama, Japan, and another 200,000 in Nan-Shan, China -- during the same tumultuous decade that had seen the beginning of the last huge U.S. hurricane cycle. Through history there have been periods of large geological shifts and during the Bronze Age it included volcanoes. From 2200 to 2400 B.C. there had been eruptions in Hawaii, Idaho, Japan, and Washington and scientists sifting and digging at the old archeological sites reported a mysterious layer of graphite in the same region where all the drought had struck.

Flowing, halting, squeezing like a silicone gel, the layers interact and at the boundaries of the floating tectonic plates is the grinding that causes earthquakes or a sinking of one plate beneath another known as "subduction," which causes yet larger quakes and sends material to the hot mantle, where it's believed to eventually melt down, rise, and resurface millions of years later as molten materials that break through cracks in the crust under the oceans and fill in the gaps left as the floors of the oceans spread apart, the fringes subducting under neighboring plates in what amounts to a huge recycling operation, the sinking of surface earth into the mantle causing heat to rise into more volcanoes.

That's the present theory although we know so little about what's under our feet that one day we may find powerful new dynamics -- surprising constitutions of rock and seething storms. In the molten regions of the core are cyclonic system that serve as the doppelganger for hurricanes on the surface and there is even lightning: as silica fractures it emits a luminous phenomenon known as fractoluminsecence, explaining why some claim to see flashes of light just before an earthquake. Movements rise and fall and rotate or stall and also create the earth's magnetic field, which fluctuates as during the Bronze Age and may do so in another set of cycles, smaller ones that cause minor magnetic shifts and larger one that may actually influence the movement of continents. There are dynamics about which we are only beginning to guess but they may well relate to forces from the sun and other cosmic systems and they remind us of their motion when the ground rumbles as along plate boundries that stretch around the earth like the seams on a baseball. There are seven major continental plates and they came alive during the 1700s with quakes that killed 137,000 in Japan and 300,000 in Calcutta.

With prayer and fasting, we can suspend natural laws that cause such disasters.
