The economy is said to be recovering and the recession coming to a close but it was not really a recession so much as the precursor of regression (which will be followed in years to come by other trends and events that bring this regression more fully into focus).

The Lord has begun to purify but we are left free will and the will of government has been to prop up the economy and clunker companies and banks that needed to fail and so the "recovery" may limp upward for a while and then there will be a comeuppance. One day soon, our infrastructures will be dismantled and our lifestyles simplified, more in tune with the way of Jesus. Will it be an economic comeuppance (the spending coming back to bite) or a societal comeuppance of another sort (or something more mysterious)?

Much stirs below, now even froths to the surface. There is pervasive anger on all sides in the United States, pointing to the potential for what we have long warned about: civil unrest, leading to upheaval, leading to the creation of a regionalized America with enclaves. That's our take. All it would require is a major disaster or the eruption of violent civil disobedience. There is much fodder. Just a spark is needed. Seers have envisioned it (which causes us to issue this warning to media commentators: who did Jesus send out to do violence?). There is deep-seated fear in the U.S. as the first black president has moved swiftly to cause substantial change. In the equation is the distinct chance of civil unrest, perhaps not in the way of the minorities from whom that has long been feared but by the "majority" that soon will not be such a majority.

There are cartoons of Hitler. Militias are on the rise.  If it is rooted in race, it is rooted in evil (as is anything else). How loud we all are! Much heat, little light; much darkness. There are propaganda machines on all sides in the many, constant debates, all of which are suddenly so heated as to be without ready precedent  in that they involve a multitude of issues (not just something like Viet Nam). When the powers-that-be support abortion it undermines trust in life issues such as health care and everything else -- removes an anointing to be sure -- while there is also the undercurrent  of fear and has been for the several years that America has permanently lost its status. It is a time of regression. It is a time of unsettlement.

"Sales of guns – black guns, rifles, shotguns and handguns (particularly 9mm) everywhere, have gone through the roof," writes Scott Wagner, a police academy commander and professor at Columbus State Community College in Ohio, and Commander of the 727 Counter Terror Training Unit. "AR15s have literally flown off of dealer shelves, and only now in the spring of 2009, have I seen the display samples of ARs begin to reappear on the wall of my favorite shooting emporium after the initial post election rush. Street cops and SWAT cops that I know from various agencies – rural, suburban and metro – in my area are scared. One of my quietest, low-profile officer-friends brought it up the other day. He said that at some point in the near future, he felt there is going to be an armed revolt if things keep going the way they are. Something has got to give. I was shocked."

This is a prayer need (or perhaps an urgency).

It is as yet difficult to know if the key underlying emotion has to do with the economy or whether there is simply a scent in the air of too much governmental control with health care, talk of forced government service, financial bail-outs, federal ownership of corporations, required vaccinations, and a federal deficit that skyrocketed under the last president (along with domestic surveillance) and now is on yet a greater trajectory with the new president, threatening the integrity of the U.S. dollar and the economic alignment. Is it fear because the new president is of a different race or because there is an undercurrent of liberalism (and secular humanism, which often bodes poorly when it comes to life issues) such as has not been seen at least since the early 1990s and perhaps as never?

It is not just a single issue. What does God think when He looks at societies that kill the young, degrade His creation, mis-educate, wage war, bilk the poor? What does He think of societies that so lavishly fund scientists who discover little and are largely antagonistic to Him? What does He think of cultures that focus almost entirely on the material and its "stock markets" (even when they call themselves Christians)? Regression can mean progression (spiritually).

It is good to be vigilant as well as fair. It is a good time to calm down. Turn down the summer heat. Anger harms the spirit. Love conquers all. But keep tuned: the U.S. approaches a threshold or may already have crossed it a few months or years ago.
