CIVIL UPRISINGS AS IN EGYPT HAVE FOLLOWED APPEARANCES IN COUNTRIES OF THE VIRGIN MARY

The civil uprisings first in countries such as Bolivia and then Greece and to a degree in France followed by the explosion in other regions such as Tunisia and Jordan and Albania and in particular Cairo lead one to ask whether the current disturbances are simply economic and Muslim or underpinned by a "spirit of revolt" that will spread globally.

There is a chance that -- spurred as it has been largely by disaffected young, and the new media (internet news, e-mail, YouTube, Facebook) -- the recent events are mere precursors for general disturbances. The availability of images and information on the internet (which allow the poor to see how well-off many young people are elsewhere) and an obvious mood among those around thirty or younger everywhere that the old guard -- the establishment -- will never change fast enough and that it is allowing the elite few to take advantage of the many and exhausting resources in the process may be the octane that revolution necessitates - and not just in the Arab world. Indeed, it was stealth internet fund-raising that was largely responsible for the meteoric rise in the U.S. of a candidate who promised "change," President Barack Obama (aided in fact by one of the founders of Facebook). The change the young want, however, is much larger and swifter than the incremental nuanced tedious political issues that are argued over on TV and radio ad nauseum and that the young have largely tuned out. What they want is in many ways laudable, and similar to what the Vatican itself preaches (social justice, preservation of nature), but the problem is that current youth are moving forward with disregard for a religious context -- often preaching that there is no need for it, and leaving Christ out (their catch-phase is "spirituality instead of religion," which is a very slippery slope). Meanwhile, that young people on the internet can even be playing a huge role in events like Egypt might raise  alarm that a personage of evil is in the details (we remember one prediction that an "anti-christ" would be a young person who combines media with science and is more a person of influence than actual political power; this said in the early 1990s).

It is also intriguing how disturbances seem to erupt in places where the Virgin Mary appears -- and warns of just such eruption. It happened in Rwanda -- where a horrid genocide followed apparitions at Kibeho in which the Blessed Mother specifically warned of mass killings (these occurred after the president died in a suspicious plane crash). It happened in Bosnia-Hercegovina after Mary came there as Queen of Peace and specifically urged reconciliation between Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims (who soon after began killing each other in a vicious civil war). It happened in Iraq -- where apparitions to a girl named Dina Basher in Mosul -- again, serious warnings -- were followed by what we all know has occurred in that country, particularly to Catholics -- and at Mosul (where churches were bombed)! In Venezuela, the Blessed Mother appeared at a spot called Betania (for "Bethany") and said matters would "start" in that nation and was followed by the rise of the dictator Chavez, which in many ways is also a revolution. It is now also occurring in Egypt -- where the Blessed Mother has appeared since the late 1960s with luminous phenomena above churches, her last such major appearance just a bit more than a year ago, and centered not only in Cairo but in some instances the Assiut area, which has been a focus of the recent uproar. She was first reported in 1968 and since then has been witnessed (including by leading political figures) at a number of spots in that area (first Zeitoun, then Edfu, Shoubra, Shentana El Hagar, Assuit, 2000 -- 2009; and Gabal Dranka), as if to accent the sweep of coming events. Millions have seen her -- a luminous silhouette, often with doves. There were no "messages" but interesting it is to read reports of vigilante gangs wielding machetes in Cairo -- just as machetes were the weapon of choice in Rwanda (where up to a million were killed in less than a year in the early 1990s). At Medjugorje, which is currently under study by the Vatican, which allows unofficial pilgrimages there, a seer, in commenting on future events, once allegedly remarked that, "It is the upheaval of a region of the world" (often what seers say, however, is mistranslated, misreported, and disputed).

If that happens, it is likely to be over food prices and shortages -- first in the Third World, but perhaps one day also in the modern West -- which has very limited grain stocks, a transportation system almost totally reliant on oil, and where the average person has only enough food to subsist for nine days or so. In Yemen, the poorest nation on the Arabian peninsula, sporadic riots have forced President Ali Abdullah Saleh into quick economic concessions, including slashing income taxes in half and ordering price controls on food and basic goods, we are told by the news. It is too early to determine if what is occurring in Egypt will repeat elsewhere, but mass uprisings in many places seem bound to happen at some point in the future and can be triggered at the stroke of a storm, as we might recall from the images several years back of downtown New Orleans in the aftermath of a hurricane called "Katrina" (which means "purification").

[Further note:

"For the first time in human history almost all of humanity is politically activated, politically conscious and politically interactive... The resulting global political activism is generating a surge in the quest for personal dignity, cultural respect and economic opportunity in a world painfully scarred by memories of centuries-long alien colonial or imperial domination... The worldwide yearning for human dignity is the central challenge inherent in the phenomenon of global political awakening... That awakening is socially massive and politically radicalizing... The nearly universal access to radio, television and increasingly the Internet is creating a community of shared perceptions and envy that can be galvanized and channeled by demagogic political or religious passions. These energies transcend sovereign borders and pose a challenge both to existing states as well as to the existing global hierarchy, on top of which America still perches...

The youth of the Third World are particularly restless and resentful. The demographic revolution they embody is thus a political time-bomb, as well... Their potential revolutionary spearhead is likely to emerge from among the scores of millions of students concentrated in the often intellectually dubious "tertiary level" educational institutions of developing countries. Depending on the definition of the tertiary educational level, there are currently worldwide between 80 and 130 million "college" students. Typically originating from the socially insecure lower middle class and inflamed by a sense of social outrage, these millions of students are revolutionaries-in-waiting, already semi-mobilized in large congregations, connected by the Internet and pre-positioned for a replay on a larger scale of what transpired years earlier in Mexico City or in Tiananmen Square. Their physical energy and emotional frustration is just waiting to be triggered by a cause, or a faith, or a hatred...

[The] major world powers, new and old, also face a novel reality: while the lethality of their military might is greater than ever, their capacity to impose control over the politically awakened masses of the world is at a historic low. To put it bluntly: in earlier times, it was easier to control one million people than to physically kill one million people; today, it is infinitely easier to kill one million people than to control one million people.[1]"
