Sent to Earth (Michael Brown) Throughout the centuries, since Noah, there have been strange times: periods when floods, earthquakes, tidal waves, storms, droughts, plagues, volcanoes, and even asteroid or comet activity have haunted the earth. The hints are right there in the nightly news. It's about to happen again. God is poised to send major events, and it's for a simple reason. Like the people in ancient times, we've allowed evil to build up, and as a result we face happenings everywhere. This is the book Mother Angelica has called  'awesome.' AS STORMS FLARE, SO DO ATTEMPTS TO DECIDE WHICH ARE 'SIGNS' AND WHICH NOT

What's in a storm? What indeed. One time back in 2000 we were chatting with a famous television evangelist, a nun, before doing a show and speaking about all the storms and other signs in nature as well as the miraculous indications of God and why so few in the Church seemed to see or accept such things and she remarked simply, "They don't believe. They don't believe." Her message: many shepherds did not truly accept the supernatural or take the Bible literally or at least did not think God intervenes on an active basis.

That was never more obvious than in Minneapolis last week -- when an extremely rare tornado roared near the downtown and ripped a steeple off the flagship Lutheran cathedral while national leaders of that congregation were there in Minneapolis -- across the street, at that very moment -- preparing to vote on whether to have a more accepting policy toward homosexuals. So stark was the "sign" that it was commented about on both religious and secular blogs and even by leaders at the event itself -- yet when it came down to the vote, they obviously dismissed it, for they proceeded not only to vote for a more accepting policy but, two days later, to allow actively homosexual as clergy!

Some said there had not been such a storm in ninety years (about as long as anyone could remember), and if that wasn't enough of a "sign," the tornado itself was brief and just a hundred yards wide and moved only over a distance of only half a mile -- just enough to knock off the steeple, disrupt the meeting, and also destroy the roof and windows of a famous local music store called the "Electric Fetus." This perhaps is taking happenstance -- and rejection of signs -- to a new level. A rare meteorological event like out of the Old Testament occurs and still Lutheran leaders proceed with a matter that contravenes Old and New Testament teachings. At the same time, a bizarre dark cloud and tornado warnings swept over Toronto, Canada [above photo] and a vicious storm felled a hundred trees in New York City's Central Park.

Are these signs? Minnesota seemed like an easy one to discern, but as Scripture tells us, it rains on the good and evil and storms can be both curses and blessings. The same week, lightning destroyed a Presbyterian church in DeBary, Florida, for no obvious reason. Does the devil also disrupt? Is he truly "prince of the power of the air"? Five years ago, during Hurricane Charley (which was recalled last week), a Catholic church in Punta Gorda was completely ruined but for the tabernacle -- next to which, amid all the debris, a candle somehow, some way, still flickered.

Sometimes, it seems, there is an angel in the whirlwind, sometimes the opposite. It is good to pay attention, especially when storms kick up in our own lives.

"I just wanted to comment about the catastrophic storm we experienced here in Southern Ontario on Thursday August 20th, 2009," wrote Corinne Aird of Hagersville, Ontario. "Environment Canada confirmed that seven tornadoes touched down in Durham, Vaughan, Collingwood, Milton, Newmarket, Markdale and Gravenhurst. In Vaughan alone, there were over 600 homes damaged or destroyed.

"Last year I started praying daily for the Precious Blood of our Lord's shoulder wound to protect our home and those of family and friends and our roads as we travel to and from our destinations. This is of particular concern to me, because I live in Hagersville and drive 57 miles to my office in Mississauga.

"That Thursday I left Mississauga at 5:00 pm under a frightening black sky and prayed that I would get home safely an hour and a half later. I felt such calm in knowing that God would look after me and my son, who was driving home from Hamilton.

"Five minutes after I got in the door, the black sky that spread all across southern Ontario opened up, but we were spared from the high winds, lightening strikes and tornadoes. The magnitude and severity of this storm left no doubt in my mind that this was a sign from God. The following morning as I passed by Hamilton airport on my way to work, I saw a gray sky with a black cloud in the shape of a dragon. It was shocking and reminded me of the Book of Revelation. Please remind people how important it is to pray for protection for their loved ones in these storms."

Adds Daniel Flies: "I have to share an experience that recently happened to my girlfriend and myself. On August 8, 2009, we were watching America's Most Wanted. It was a very warm and muggy evening. All of the sudden the tornado warning sirens were going off, and we quickly turned the channel to find out what was going on, as of that point the show we were watching hadn't flashed an alert.  Immediately we were informed that there was a tornado spotted in a city just a few miles away and it was headed toward Plymouth, Minnesota, where I live in.

"We quickly went outside and walked around to take a look.  The sky was greenish tint in one direction and had a very dark, almost black wall cloud just to the west. We went back into gather things and turn lights out. We quickly went to move my girlfriend's vehicle in the garage and she noticed a rotation in the clouds what seemed like just blocks away. The clouds appeared as if they were boiling and spinning. We quickly got into my vehicle, and as we drove off, my first concern was who's with Jesus, as I live a mile away from a Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

"My instinct took me towards the church, and no sooner than being about one to two blocks from my home, there was this downdraft of sudden and intense wind. Debris was flying through the air and hitting my car, the vehicle was shaking, yet I just continued to drive towards the church. Finally clearing this very quick brush with the intense winds and making it to the chapel, we found that our Lord was not alone and there were people there. We breathed a sigh of relief and sat in the parking lot listening to the radio for the storm reports. Not long after things seemed to clear a bit more, we drove back down the same road in my neighborhood, only to find major devastation. There were news crews, power companies, and people everywhere surveying the damage.

"The very next day it was confirmed that it was an actual tornado touchdown. Forty-three houses damaged, trees uprooted, power lines were down and all thanks be to God, no one was injured. What I have come to realize is that we actually drove through the tornado. We were on our way to make sure the Lord was protected, when he was already right there protecting us. We were blessed with his great love and that of his mother's promise to those who pray the Rosary daily, and wear the brown scapular. After reflection on this whole experience, I felt it necessary to share this miracle and this story of our Lord's great love for us.  I personally have been blessed by His Mercy and Protection in my life because I trust in Him!!!"

[Further note from news report on Hurricane Charley anniversary:

"Father Jerry Kaywell is the pastor of the church. He was hired just months before Charley hit. Shortly after arriving he discovered his church was infested with termites. 'I remember on August 6th, I said to my building manager, Tom Grant, Tom, what we need is a great big wind to come and blow this place down.'

"Little did he know what was about to happen. 'The church split apart and imploded,' says Kaywell. 'Pews riveted into the ground were ripped and and tossed around like twigs.'

"But the tabernacle, the holiest place in the church, survived the hurricane untouched.

"And the candle next to it continued to burn."]

[Note too: in 2002 a cross on Mann Hall at Trinity College in Burlington, Vermont, was destroyed by lightning shortly after that school stopped being a Catholic institution  and was about to be sold to the University of Vermont.]

[The nun was Mother Angelica of Alabama, who said of the book she was interviewing us about, Sent To Earth (about God and natural events):  "If you didn't buy his book, you're missing it. It's not a scary book; it's a very good book. If you haven't bought it I would buy it. I think it's a great book, just terrific. I think it's important for my future and your future. I want you to read Sent To Earth. Why? It's logical, it's truthful, it's sensible, and it's God's way of saying, 'Let's be ready.'"]
