PULLING FEW PUNCHES, BOOK LOOKS AT PROPHECY AND CYCLES OF DECAY AND SEES U.S. IN THE CARDS
Comes now Father Joseph M. Esper, a fresh writer on the scene, with another worthy book, this one On The Brink? America and the Coming Divine Judgment.
We all sense this.
Father Esper, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, spells it out -- in a well-written overview of everything from what's going on in our society (the incredible, and quickening, moral decay) to current-day alleged seers and even the reputed revelations of September 11 and their possible connections to future events, events that are looming.
There will be, as the priest puts it, "the humbling of America."
Are we already seeing it transform into what one man, Dr. Howard Storm, foresaw as a "third-world country"?
"In 1776 America declared its independence from Great Britain," writes Father Esper. "As it happens, in that same year an historian in Europe named Alexander Fraser Tyler offered a warning that has become highly relevant to our nation's future. In researching his book, The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Empire, Tyler discovered a pattern or cycle in the rise and fall of empires and nations. The cycle is as follows:
"'From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from great courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; and from dependence back again to bondage.'"
As Father Esper points out, Tyler discovered from his purview of history that the average length of time for this cycle to unfold was approximately two hundred years, and America has already exceeded this by almost four decades and counting.
And so it is that we see not only a collapse in morality -- and we do mean a collapse -- but also the alarming (and we do mean alarming) moves to restrict religious liberty.
Can America still think of itself as a "shining light on a hill"? A nation "under God'?
The Church's enemies are being revealed -- starkly.
From the alleged Our Lady of America messages to current locutions, in the context of current events, we see in this book matters laid out starkly before us.
Don't worry about time-tables, says the priest; worry about what you see going on. These are the "signs of the times" -- along, he notes, with natural disasters (which he thinks even relate to matters in Israel).
It's not a book without hope. To the contrary. But it is a candid one, integrating mysticism with devotion and scholarship. We'll not get into parsing every view. We'll say simply this: God takes down (or lets collapse) regions of the world in accordance with evil therein. When the majority of people are headed for hell, that's when a region is dismantled. That's God's Mercy.
