Of rainbows and lightning

The rainbow is being used in peculiar fashion these days -- the White House swathed in it, the castle at Disney -- but originally it symbolized the covenant with God. In recent times, it has been used by the New Age movement, by radical ecologists (the "Rainbow Warrior"), by wiccans, Freemasons (they have a branch called the International Order of Rainbow for Girls), and most recently, since a "drag queen" invented it in 1978, as a flag representing "gay pride (the artist went under the name of "Busty Ross"; our strange times). Hindus and Buddhists consider the rainbow a sacred symbol (and flock to Niagara Falls, which creates rainbows, as a result). At its most basic -- back in the time of Noah -- it served as an amalgamation of colors representing supernatural beauty, promise, and enlightenment. It's difficult to see how it currently enlightens. It seems fairly dark out there to us. In Chinese wisdom, the rainbow served as a bridge to Heaven, one mediated by a serpent. It is also a symbol of yin and yang. The profoundly pagan Norse saw it as a bridge between gods. Native Americans viewed it as a multi-colored serpent. There is thus a pagan  underpinning.

In the Bible the rainbow represents atonement, not indulgence.

God's peace -- and enlightenment -- to everyone; that should be the message.

"The rainbow colors red, purple (which is a mix of red and blue), and scarlet (a bright red) and crimson (a cooler hue of the color red) were used extensively in the tabernacle Moses made in the wilderness," notes a biblicist. "They were also a part of the temple later constructed, and in the garments for the High Priest and other priests (Exodus 25:3-5, 36:8, 19, 27:16, 28:4-8, 39:1-2, etcetera.). These colors were types or shadows of atonement. The colors purple and scarlet can mean or represent iniquity or sinfulness (Revelation 17:3-4, 18:16, etc.)." Thus we see how distorted it has become. The gay flag has six colors but God's rainbow had seven. It was a pact that now has been mocked. The rainbow colors at the White House and Disney, we note, are seen only when it is dark. "The color white found in Heaven's rainbows can mean holiness, righteousness and dedication to serving the true God (Leviticus 16:4, 2 Chronicles 5:12)."

"This is outrageous," erupted Franklin Graham, son of Billy, on Monday. "A real slap in the face to the millions of Americans who do not support same-sex marriage and whose voice is being ignored. God is the one who gave the rainbow, and it was associated with His judgment. God sent a flood to wipe out the entire world because mankind had become so wicked and violent. One man, Noah, was found righteous and escaped God's judgment with his family."

Let's love all but tell it like it is when it comes to sin.

Did you know that many rainbows are actually circular? It's just that you can't see the entire refraction.

Rainbows are interesting because for the most part they come after storms, and storms present something else that serves as a symbol: lightning. Is there a supernatural element to that?

Satan fell as a bolt of lightning, Jesus told us (He witnessed it), and it often comes at poignant times. It was a bolt of lightning four summers back that disrupted the microphone of a presidential candidate who was taking a bishop to task over abortion. It was bolts of lightning that were used by Nazi police (the SS).

If there is a link to lightning, is there a spiritual link to electricity in general?

We write much about near-death experiences, and according to a nurse and author, Dr. Penny Sartori, whose book The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences we will carry shortly, those who come back from near-death experiences often report electrical phenomena. They say they are more sensitive to anything powered by electromagnetism.

"One lady who works in a high-tech environment contacted me after she saw an article I had published," says the researcher. "She had had an NDE during childhood and she reported that all types of electrical items malfunction in her presence and she cannot wear a wrist watch as they all just stop working. In fact, she needs to monitor time as part of her job and has resorted to wearing an alarm clock on a string around her neck."

Said another, who had a near-death experience at the age of ten, "When I began work in an old-style office in the mid-1960s, I was banned from going near or touching the photocopier as it would cease working or run erratically if I did so. I can feel a slight surge through my body when I am within a few millimeters or touching the switch or appliance and I know whether there is going to be any problem or not there and then. When I first started using a computer... the remote radio-controlled keyboard and mouse and I were not compatible!"

Electrical phenomena are often reported in association with "hauntings" or supposed signs from the deceased. They also take place in cases of exorcism.

And so there is electricity. And so there are rainbows. In its current use, one wonders if, reversing the order, this time the rainbow comes before the storm.

[Footnote: As this news link from Malaysia reports, "The U.S. government has just recognized gay marriage, and this allows gay people all around the world to see the coming promise, leading the large-scale celebrations. New Taipei City in Taiwan, Ba-Xian Water Park hosted a 'rainbow party' this past Saturday. Unfortunately, there was a tragic event of a massive explosion, causing many people to be burned. It is currently estimated that at least 458 people are injured, and some of them have critical injuries."]
