THE MAILBAG: WHEN GOD RESCUES US, SOMETIMES IT'S BY WAY OF ANGELS WHO CAN TAKE ANY FORM THEY LIKE

Rescued by an Angel

by Cindy Loflin and Kathleen Finn

On November 4, 2007, my friend Kathleen and I experienced a mysterious rescue.

Around 8:00 p.m., I was driving us home to Nashville from Knoxville, heading west on I-40.  We were transporting my Bernese Mountain Dog Jade from a dog show (where she'd won her class and earned points towards her championship).

Jade was in the back of my large Toyota Sequoia SUV.  We were traveling up a very steep mountain without any lights, exits or commercial areas anywhere.

The night was clear as we climbed the Cumberland Plateau toward Harriman.  There were no other cars on the road, and we were enjoying the peaceful drive after Jade's hectic show schedule.

Suddenly, we both were overwhelmed with a sense of evil approaching from behind.  We looked at each other in shock as a sports car came speeding up close behind us and stayed right on the Sequoia's tail.

We immediately started praying aloud, asking Jesus to protect us from harm.

The sports car quickly accelerated and pulled up right next to me in the left lane.

It was a dark blue Mercedes convertible C300, and obviously a very powerful car. Through its tinted windshield, I had a glimpse of a dark-haired man with his hair slicked back. Because the side windows were more heavily tinted, we couldn't see him when he was right next to us, but we both felt him watching us. I remember feeling that our lives were in danger.

I've driven that route many times and I knew that we were in a long space between exits.

Suddenly, the Mercedes sped up, pulled directly in front of us and then zoomed ahead with the lights off. A license plate was on the car, but it was obscured. My husband had just installed halogen lights on the Sequoia, so I could see him well ahead on the rise of the hill.

He switched back to the left lane and then pulled off to the left shoulder, with the car's front facing the road.

For a few seconds, his lights came on as he crossed the empty interstate and then positioned his car again to face the road.

I immediately slowed almost to a stop as we wondered what to do. The carjacking attempt lasted nearly seven minutes, while he swerved at us, sped ahead, doubled back and attempted to rear-end us, repeating each tactic several times.

Suddenly, we became aware of a vehicle about a quarter mile behind us, still in the valley we just passed through. My husband had just taken a defensive driving course, and I remembered him saying, “When you are faced with an aggressive driver, slow down until they are safely away from you." At the same time I was recalling our conversation, the Holy Spirit whispered, “get behind that truck” – which involved slowing down from 70 mph to 30 mph on the interstate.

It was a small Krispy Kreme truck, traveling at about thirty miles per hour!

What was really strange is that this tiny camper-style truck was more like a golf cart than an interstate vehicle. Even more strangely, I couldn't see any driver in it, even though the cab was lit with a bluish-white light. I immediately pulled in right behind the little truck and slowly climbed the hill.

Ahead of us, we could clearly see the Mercedes waiting on the right shoulder.

I remember thinking how fragile our Krispy Kreme shield was, but I felt that we were supposed to stay right behind it and continue forward.

Suddenly, the Mercedes zoomed back onto the road and took off at about a hundred miles an hour in the direction we were heading.  Our cries for help quickly became prayers of gratitude.

Eventually, we called the Highway Patrol.

The next morning I was contacted by an agent from Homeland Security. Although we never learned anything more about the mysterious man in the Mercedes, we knew that Jesus had sent a Krispy Kreme angel to rescue us.

[Footnote, a prayer of protection; Our Lady of Medjugorje gave five wonderful promises to those who pray for atheists, those "who have not come to know the love of the Heavenly Father." The promises are:

1. "I will strengthen you."
2. "I will fill you with my graces."
3. "With my love, I will protect you from the evil spirit."
4. "I will be with you."
5. "With my presence, I will console you in difficult moments."

The prayer:

"In the Name of Jesus, Who said that anything we ask in His Name will be
given to those who believe, I ask that those who have not come to know the
love of the Heavenly Father will be blessed with the knowledge that they are
loved by Him beyond all human reasoning and understanding. Please grant
them the gift to feel His love as it enfolds them to such an extent that they
will be unable to resist or deny it. May the knowledge of the Heavenly
Father's infinite love stir within their hearts the desire to return that love
to Him, and to reflect it to all others. May their lives be a pure
reflection of His resplendent love. I ask this in the Name of the Father, and
the Son, and the Holy Spirit, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Amen"]
