PROPHECY: MISSIVE FROM 1990 HAD RADICAL IDEA OF LIFESTYLE NOW UNDERSCORED IN NEW BOOK

[Print article]

In the obscure "revelation" called the "1990 prophecy" were some notions so radical and alien that for years we viewed them disbelievingly.

One part that caused the skepticism:

"Know this about the world," Jesus supposedly said, speaking of His Second Coming, in towering light, in this anonymous night-time locution -- which had aspects that have since materialized. "I would not appear on television, nor ride a car, nor travel in an airplane.

"Would I come in such a manner?

"Would I live in such a world?

"You think of the changes in very simple ways, without realizing the fundamental mistakes of mankind.

"The very artifice of your societies is false and against the accordance of God's Will.

"This artifice shall not last.

"Your very conceptions of happiness and comforts are a great evil and falsity.

"They will not stand.

"My greatest nemesis is science, even more so than the media. The science that alters life, the science which creates a counterfeit heaven, the science that toils with the womb and genes, the science that has filled the air with the power of the enemy, the science which creates chemical witchcraft and fouls the earth, the science which seeks to create life but cannot in actuality even sustain it, the science which has denied God.

"This will fall, and all of its creations with it."

That's radical stuff. And yet in the years since, the little realizations of how disjointed we as societies have become, how divorced from what He created (nature), how exploitive of resources, how deadset on re-creating (from chemicals to  genetic engineering) have slowly but surely trickled in to us.

Might it be true? What if mankind -- which always considers progress a good thing -- has actually veered onto the wrong course; what if it is modern mankind that is radical?

We still attempt to discern it. We think of planes: are they natural -- and yet who among us doesn't want them? As people who frequently fly, we do have to admit: one never gets used to it and there is something very jarring and unnatural about it. Television: does the very medium of broadcast -- not to mention the new transmissions via internet and cell phones -- insert an energy into Creation that is not part of His Plan? (Jesus would not even appear on religious TV?)

Radical indeed. Look how no one can live without a cell phone and laptop or iPad just as a few short years ago we could not live without a telephone and television and before that radio or telegraph and certainly we could not live without cars let alone without air conditioning.

Is all of this wrong? Is that what we are to believe? Or at least a good part of it?

Might it be that the way we generate energy -- by using limited resources, or creating undisposable wastes -- are the problem? Or the energy itself (electricity)?

Your guess (and discernment) is as good as ours.

It is certainly intriguing how folks who have near-death experiences come back with similarly radical views and how, getting back to the "prophecy," cars have certainly been an incredible convenience and yet the way highways have cut off and cut down trees and wildlife -- separated us from His Creation. Does God approve of a technology that mows down what He created (without anyone using it after it is killed)?

What have been the fruits of chemicals?

In some cases, lifesaving medicines.

In others, carcinogens.

Things to weigh.

Very hard.

Would Christ -- that Man born in a manger -- step from a limo (to appear on Nightline)?

Intriguing it also is to mediate on how natural the world was at the time of His First Coming. Might it one day be reduced to that clean simplicity again? They are just questions. We think everything we concoct is so wonderful and can list the many "benefits" and conveniences of the industrial revolution and mass production and technology yet a closer look might reveal an underside.

In a new book, in stunning conformity with the 1990 missive, author Emmett O'Regan from Ireland,  says in Unveiling the Apocalypse "it seems that God’s original intention for man was to be at one with the environment, being sustained harmoniously by nature.

"This mutually sustaining relationship with nature is complicated by humankind’s development of technology when man begins to manipulate his surroundings through agriculture in order to find sufficient nourishment. It is here, in the growth of agriculture that we find the birth of technology that will inevitably lead to the development of civilization itself, symbolized through the story of Cain and Abel.

"Abel the pastoral nomad favored by God is murdered by his agrarian brother.

"In a precursor to the mark of the Beast, Cain is then marked by God to set him apart from other peoples, and his descendants go on to build the first cities."

O'Regan argues on: "Genesis offers an unrelenting critique of civilization. The civic modus operandi is held in juxtaposition with the pastoral nomadic existence led by Abraham and the rest of the patriarchs. From the haughty attempts to build the tower of Babel, to the destruction of the wicked Sodom and Gomorrah, civilization is seldom held in a sympathetic light.  Civilization, and the technology that allows it to develop, is created through the artifice of man.

"The Book of Genesis thus depicts civilization and technology as a necessary evil resulting from humankind’s development of wisdom. The promises of the serpent that the gift of wisdom would be imparted through the consumption of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, ring true. It is exactly this wisdom that enables the creation of technology and civilization. But the serpent in his jealousy knows that it is this same knowledge and technology that will lead to the ultimate demise of humanity itself.

"The 'flaming sword' which threatens to consume the planet described in the Third Secret finds its origins in the same part of the Book of Genesis. Genesis states that a flaming sword was placed at the gates of Eden to protect the Tree of Life."

Radical indeed. Sometimes, similar to what the Vatican has stated about technology, materialism, and the environment. But a step further, for sure -- and for our cautious discernment.
