Spiritual warfare memo:

There has been another spike in the upward march of the intensity of our times. There are always little ups and downs but it is the negatives that are beginning to spike so relentlessly, whether in the natural realm or society.

Politics. The economy. We're in this state where the pretense of wealth is deflating like a balloon and we enter a period not so much of "recession" or "depression" but of "regression." Simpler times loom.

More to the point, pretenses (especially on Wall Street) are falling. We're seeing where Satan operates. Those who follow the apparition site of Medjugorje were interested in the most recent monthly message, issued on Saturday, which was unusually stark: "Dear children!" it said. "In a special way I call you all to pray for my intentions so that, through your prayers, you may stop Satan's plan over this world, which is further from God every day."

It was the first mention of Satan by name in an official message since July 25, 2005.

"Further from God every day."

Just three weeks before, another seer, Mirjana Soldo, had an apparition during which she was video-taped weeping profoundly.

For those who believe we are surfacing from a period of dark, who hate talk of "doom and gloom," who believe not much in the devil, it was a bracing message.

Events loom. Masks fall. They will continue to fall. But there will also be a rise in evil -- which means we will see it more blatantly.

In America -- whose citizens often interpret global messages as pertaining to the U.S. (since it remains the world's pre-eminent "power") -- the Blessed Mother's reputed call to pray so that "you may stop Satan's plan over this world" no doubt will be related by many to the current election season -- which so many see as a great spiritual conflict.

Might "Satan's plan" involve a new order of governance -- or usher in an entirely new darkness?

Some will interpret it that way. Does not the image from Guadalupe nearly look like there are stars and stripes?

The events that await are larger, however, than any one nation. The U.S. constitutes only 4.5 percent of the world population, and it commits two percent of the global abortions.  Whoever wins will be a factor in future events -- purification -- but perhaps not to the extent imagined.

Moreover, there are other equally serious issues like euthanasia in Switzerland and the creation of human-animal hybrids in England -- sanctioned by the government.

Most importantly, there is personal morality. When it comes to chastisements, they will have more to do with individual conduct that political candidates. The Blessed Mother said the world "is further from God every day," and that means humanity in total. In that purification, the fall of financial "titans" will flow into a much larger river, important as a sign, but in the realm of what will occur, perhaps not as large as we think.

Since 1995, there have been 207 named storms in the Atlantic basin, which includes the Gulf of Mexico a 68 percent increase from the previous 13 years, according to statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Of those storms, 111 were hurricanes, a 75 percent increase over the previous period.

Signs. Events. A single epic natural disaster (as in the Middle Ages) can dwarf an economic depression.

God is the ultimate pollster and can take an instant poll of the good and bad in every single person on earth (knowing how they truly feel), and  this (not Gallup) will be the decisive survey.

There will be chastisements independent of politics. Like politicians, we wear "masks" and the time is here when the masks will be removed. In the ministry of deliverance, there is something known as the "pretense." It is a first step in exorcism: breaking down the facade that is erected to hide the presence of evil.

For many are the deceits of Satan. He can hide behind a smile, behind compassion, behind a hand-grabber. Of course, he can hide behind religion. Do we have pretenses? Have we prayed to rid ourselves of facades? Have we penetrated to our own souls and sought purification, that we might mitigate what is in store (as we can do)?

And are we afflicted by others?

Before deliverance can occur, this pretense must be punctured (and that happens when we invoke the Holy Spirit). The pretense of Wall Street is currently being broken down as will be pretense of our general economy. No matter who wins the election in America, purification is coming. We will see this in the light of the Truth and the Truth of the Light.

But the joy is that the pretenses will be coming down, and a joy that is, for when the pretense is removed, there is the truth, and it is the truth, said Jesus, that sets us free.
